Winter Solstice
Here then, by some reckonings, new year's day, and the official start of winter. The winter one feels worth marking as it's cold and wet and miserable and it's nice to think we're heading back towards warmer days and spring again.
Working out the solstices and equinoxes were likely some of the very first scientific things humans ever did. There's nothing obvious that tells you today is the solstice, same with the equinoxes. You wouldn't know it was happening at all unless you were measuring things; it'd take you a few weeks to notice the days getting longer again otherwise.
So yeah, I'll raise a glass to that. Chin chin!
